Safe and vibey way to experience township life
Though much of Gauteng is beautiful, you can often feel you're not really in Africa. That won't happen in Soweto. Since many of Johannesburg's sights are in Soweto, it makes sense to stay here, if only for a day or two. This budget hostel is near Vilakazi Street, the Hector Pieterson memorial and many other tourist draws, and the neighborhood is safe. As at most South African backpackers, single and double rooms are available at R180/290 a night. (Rates will rise steeply during World Cup). All meals available, R35-65. Lebo, who's won several tourism awards, started his business career selling curios in front of the memorial. He opened the backpackers in his family's home and never looked back. Lebo also offers bicycle and minivan tours of Soweto, including, if you're game, a bungee off the landmark Orlando Towers (see separate listing in Businesses). Secure off-street parking; airport transfers arranged.
