Luxury living in the Cradle of Humankind
This amazing small hotel near the Sterkfontein Caves museum and archaeological site has won awards for its design, cuisine and hospitality. Semi-subterranean suites are designed to blend into the landscape (with grass roofs) and decorated in restrained Afro-chic style. The property is on a small game ranch located within the Sterkfontein Caves site in Gauteng's dwindling greenbelt; guests can see 160 bird species, kudu, waterbuck, even hippos on walks around the property -- or even from their bathtubs! The floors are heated and there are fireplaces to cozy up the highveld nights. The caves themselves -- 15 separate archaeological sites -- have yielded more Australopithecus remains than anyplace in the world, and are still being excavated. All this fabulousness doesn't come cheap: suites start at R2100/night including meals. Dinner at the acclaimed Roots restaurant is about R400. The acclaimed weekend brunch is a steal at R135. If you'd like to stay at Sterkfontein but can't afford Forum Homini, go to maropeng.co.za, the site's official site, for alternative accommodation.
